Top Tips to Take Care of Newborns in Sunny Spells

Whether you are heading into summer or living in a warmer climate, the way you take care of your little one shifts with the weather. Be aware that your little one is more sensitive to heat and sun than we are so be vigilant in keeping them safe! Here are a few of our top Baby Academy tips to protect your bundle of joy during sunny spells:

1. Prevention from overheating

  • Remember the golden rule – dress your baby in only one more layer than you.
  • Avoid being outdoors with your baby for longer than a few minutes at a time.
  • If you want to spend some time outdoors with your baby, go first thing in the morning after they wake up when the weather is cooler.
  • Stay in cool or air conditioned areas.
  • Increase your baby’s fluid. If bottle feeding, offer an extra ounce at feeds, if breastfeeding, drink plenty of water and your body will do the rest to hydrate your baby! It is not necessary to give a baby under 6 months water to drink.
  • Never leave your baby alone in the car, even for a short while with the windows down.
  • Be aware that overheating can result in hyperthermia or heat exhaustion so if your baby seems unwell, immediately call your health provider.

2. Protection from the sun

  • Dress your baby in long-sleeved, sun-protective clothes.
  • Use a hat to protect their head.
  • Use sunglasses to shield their eyes.
  • Avoid direct sunlight and keep your baby in the shade.
  • If they’re over six months old, use sunscreen of at least SPF15.
  • Make sure that if you are using a material to shade your baby that it is safe as even light materials, without proper ventilation, can cause your baby to quickly overheat.

3. Prevention from water-related accidents

  • Whether it be a day at the pool or beach, or just giving your baby a bath, the same rules – be active and vigilant!
  • Keep eyes or hands on your little one at all times.
  • Make sure to baby proof any gates or access points to the nearby pool or beach.
  • Learn CPR in the terrible case that you may need to use it.
