What is an Antenatal class?

Antenatal classes are designed to help you and your partner to prepare for labour, birth and early parenthood.
The majority of antenatal classes will focus mostly on labour and birth, with others guiding you through late pregnancy, and on what life with a new-born baby may be like.

At The Baby Academy, we ensure to cover both. In addition, we believe that Baby First Aid is one of the most important things you can learn as an expectant parent, so unlike many other antenatal classes we’ve included it as part of the class at no extra cost.

We understand that going to a class to learn about parenthood can seem very outdated. There’s plenty of information available on the internet, and you’re surrounded by family and friends who are offering you advice, sometimes whether you’re asking for it or not!.

However, all those different sources don’t necessarily agree, and they tend to be shaded by people’s personal opinions.

Our course is designed to provide you with most of the up-to-date information you need, as well as the different options you have for each aspect of your pregnancy and birth.

A class can make parents feel relaxed and are prepared for the life-changing journey ahead.

No one is going to tell you that you can’t be a parent if you haven’t gone to an antenatal class.

While you don’t have to go to antenatal classes, they are available in three forms:

  1. free in some maternity hospitals, although often requiring you to attend various evenings/weekends
  2. for a fee with private arms of maternity hospitals
  3. for a fee with independent providers

Experiences can vary between antenatal classes provided, however, they are great for putting your mind at ease before your baby arrives. You’ll also meet other parents who might be expecting at a similar time to yourself.

It’s always nice to have other people to share your excitement, worries and fears with. While similar due dates do not automatically make you best friends, you may find it’s nice to have people to talk to during those first daunting months of parenthood.
