Our Childbirth Class instructors, who are qualified, certified and practicing Nurse-Midwives, truly believe that knowledge is power and our goal is to help prepare and empower parents!

Sue

Co-founder, Certified Nurse-Midwife and Head of Childbirth Education

Sue is co-founder of The Baby Academy, Midwife, Childbirth Instructor and a busy Mom of two. With over 15 years’ experience Sue has worked in all areas of Midwifery such as Birthing Suite, Antenatal wards, Postnatal wards and currently manages The Antenatal Education Department in a large Maternity Hospital.

Emily

Certified Nurse-Midwife and Childbirth Class Instructor

Emily has been practicing as a full-scope certified nurse-midwife for over a decade having earned her master’s in midwifery from The Ohio State University. She is nationally board certified and has been lucky enough to “catch” almost 1,000 babies so far! Emily has experience attending births in both in a hospital setting and in a freestanding birth center. In 2019, she authored a journal article on the outcomes of water birth in the hospital, as well as a textbook chapter on evidence-based OB care. In 2020, she began a full-time faculty position and is now teaching certified nurse-midwife students. She places great value on patient education, whether during pregnancy, labor and delivery, postpartum, or well visits. Informed consent and shared decision making have always been cornerstones of her practice. She is committed to furthering equity in pregnancy care in the US in order to address racial disparities in pregnancy and infant outcomes.

Jannah

Certified Nurse-Midwife and Childbirth Class Instructor

Jannah is a Nurse-Midwife with over a decade of experience and also a Mom of three. Having started as a birth doula for low-income families, Jannah went on to complete a BSc in Nursing and a MSc in Nurse-Midwifery over the course of her career. As well as becoming a childbirth education instructor, Jannah is hugely passionate about helping expectant parents prepare for the wonderful journey ahead. Jannah believes that education truly is power and understands that increasing the knowledge of childbearing families can decrease the echoing, trans-generational economic, and racial disparities that they are faced with. Jannah brings with her a wealth of knowledge, having empowered families across numerous States in the country.

Odessa

Certified Nurse-Midwife and Childbirth Class Instructor

Odessa has almost a decade of experience practising full-scope midwifery, including primary care, family planning, antenatal, intrapartum, postpartum care, plus many other aspects of midwifery. Odessa is also a guest lecturer for the midwifery education and nursing program at the NYU Rory Myers School of Nursing and conducts training for nurses as a consultant for the Department of Mental Health & Hygiene in her area.

Dr. Elyse

Certified Nurse-Midwife and Childbirth Class Instructor

Dr. Elyse Cho graduated from Baylor University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. After graduation, Elyse worked as an RN in a labor and delivery ward in a large hospital. With a special interest in breastfeeding and delayed cord clamping, Elyse graduated with honors Doctorate of Nursing Practice in Nurse-Midwifery soon after. Elyse believes pregnancy and birth are naturally beautiful and is passionate about providing supportive midwifery care to all women who desire it. Elyse has experience at a public hospital, helped establish midwifery at a private practice and hospital, and has experienced home birth with her own children. Elyse lives and works in Texas with her daughter and their furry friends. In her free time, Elyse enjoys spending time with her family, cooking, and baking, spending time at the beach, and traveling.

Laura

Certified Nurse-Midwife and Childbirth Class Instructor

Having obtained her Masters in Nursing, CNM and WHNP certifications in 2014, Laura has done a large portion of her training working in the area of homebirth, and after graduation attended births in the hospital setting.  Prior to then, she worked as a nurse and postpartum doula where she would educate new parents both in their homes and in the hospital setting regarding infant care, breastfeeding and postpartum care. Currently, Laura cares for patients within a large community health clinic providing family planning, women’s health, obstetric, and postpartum care with a sex-positive and body affirming approach. Her greatest joy in her practice comes from seeing the clients in her care feeling educated, heard and empowered.

Cris

Certified Nurse-Midwife and Childbirth Class Instructor

Cris has been a practicing Nurse Midwife for 28 years and a busy mom of 4 children! She has delivered well over a thousand babies during her career.  She spent several years doing a fellowship in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine and obtained her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree at Duke University.  Cris has practiced in all areas of women’s health at both large university medical centers, clinic settings, as well as private practice.  She is passionate about empowering women and helps them to realize their internal strength during pregnancy and delivery.

Siobhan

Certified Nurse-Midwife and Childbirth Class Instructor

Siobhan has been professionally caring for women for nearly 30 years and has had the honor of attending thousands of births. She is a natural teacher with over 20 experience as both a Certified Nurse-Midwife and childbirth educator. As Siobhan guides families through pregnancy, she draws from her own experience as a mother of twins and an extensive and varied midwifery career. She shares her expertise from attending births in homes, free standing birth centers and hospitals including waterbirths and as a surgical assistant for cesarean sections. She has taught maternity care to both nursing and midwifery students. She is passionate about helping growing families understand their birth options and make informed decisions.

Emily

Certified Nurse-Midwife and Childbirth Class Instructor

Emily has been working with moms and babies since 2003. She started her work in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit as an RN.  In the NICU, she discovered her passion for empowering families to make informed decisions and become active participants in their care.  She completed her Masters in Midwifery through Frontier Nursing University in 2015.  She started as a midwife in a freestanding birth center, then transitioned to “catching” in the hospital setting for private practice.  She now works as a hospitalist in a busy labor and delivery unit. More than anything, she loves to witness the birth of a parent.  She believes education is the foundation which helps women step into their own power during their pregnancy and birth.  She has 2 girls, one born in the hospital and one at home with a midwife.

Penny

International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)

Penny has been a Nurse-Midwife for over 3 decades and an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) since 1999. She earned her PhD in Nursing Science from the University of Illinois at Chicago with research examining how healthcare providers learn to support breastfeeding mothers. In addition to her midwifery practice and teaching, Penny worked as an IBCLC for a service that covered 300 births per month. Penny is a Mom to 3 grown sons and most recently served as Director of the Nurse-Midwifery and Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner programs at The Ohio State University.

Larissa

International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)

Larissa is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), a registered Dietitian, and a Doctor of Health Sciences. She has experience as a Lactation Consultant in both the acute hospital setting as well as her own private practice. Larissa works as a part-time adjunct professor teaching nutrition and lactation courses at multiple universities. Her passion lies in educating expectant and new parents with lactation knowledge to give them the skills and confidence to reach their breastfeeding goals. She is also a busy mom of 3 boys.

Lucina

International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)

Lucina has practiced full spectrum midwifery for almost twenty years and has been an IBCLC for close to a decade. In her career, she has served hundreds of families through preconception, pregnancy, birth, the postpartum and beyond. She is committed to providing the most current evidence based care and served on her state midwifery licensing board. Lucina was also the director of an urban community breastfeeding center that supported families from all backgrounds through their entire breastfeeding journeys. She was recently appointed to the steering committee for her state’s universal home visit program, which will provide home visits from healthcare professionals for all families with new babies. Lucina is passionate about equity and inclusion and believes that parents are the ultimate experts on themselves, their babies, and their own unique families. She is the devoted mom of three awesome children.

Marisa

International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)

Marisa has been working with families and their babies since 2003. She began her career by spending 12 years as an RN in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and it was here where her passion for working with moms and their babies began.
Driven by her unwavering desire to help new mothers, Marisa became an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant in 2015. Since then, she has had the pleasure of working with thousands of mother-baby dyads as the lead lactation consultant in her local hospital. Her enthusiasm for her work is evident in her first meetings with patients.
Marisa maintains just as much love and dedication in her home life. She is the mother to three beautiful children who she successfully breastfed and a wife to a devoted husband. Her family’s support, and her motivation to ensure that a new mom’s experience is a smooth and joyous one, gives Marisa all of the energy she needs to continue to give top notch instructions to her patients and students.

Lindsey

Pediatric Nurse

Lindsey is a Certified Pediatric Emergency Nurse (CPEN) who specializes in children’s emergency care. She works in one of the nation’s top 10 best children’s hospitals, specifically within the busy Emergency Department.
Her current role involves pediatric emergency care research nursing, where she collaborates with in-hospital interdisciplinary team members, outlying hospital systems, and other academic research centers across the nation and world to continually improve the standards of care for pediatric emergency patients.
In addition to her extensive pediatric emergency care knowledge, she also has experience working as a labor and delivery nurse. These experiences have involved caring for mothers and babies throughout the antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum stages. Lindsey has a strong passion for educating others, family-centered care, pediatric health promotion, and primary injury prevention.

Alycia

Pediatric Nurse

Alycia is a Pediatric Nurse and IBCLC. She has worked with new families for over twenty years as an IBCLC, nurse, birth and postpartum doula, and nanny. For the last five years, she has worked as a nurse in pediatric primary and urgent care at a large community health center, helping triage parent’s concerns over the phone and in person. Alycia also works as an IBCLC at a large academic medical center, a community hospital, and in private practice, helping parents learn to feed their infants. She has had the pleasure of serving on the boards of both the Massachusetts American Nurses Association and the Massachusetts Lactation Consultant’s Association. She is currently enrolled as a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) student with a focus in Pediatrics at Boston College. Alycia looks forward to utilizing her DNP education to help close the gaps in the public health system that adversely affect new families and new immigrants. She is passionate about helping families navigate the many challenges of parenthood. Alycia is also the mother of a busy two and a half year old.

Lydia

Pediatric Nurse

Lydia is a registered nurse with over 12 years of experience. She has worked in pediatrics, labor, delivery and postnatal care, and currently works in urgent care. Prior to becoming a nurse, she was a birth doula providing families with education and support before, during, and after the birth of their babies. Lydia loves caring for young children and families, and empowering parents with knowledge and encouragement. Most importantly, Lydia is the mother of two children who keep her learning all the time! She enjoys sharing her expertise and is passionate about increasing the support around other parents and caregivers!
