Why we don’t recommend a baby bumper on your baby’s cot

Our midwives don’t recommend anything additional inside the cot with your baby. Babes love to snuggle and will instinctively move towards soft or fluffy bumpers which increases the risk of suffocation or becoming entangled in the ties. Cot bumpers among other objects such as wedges, straps, toys and even loose bedding pose a threat to babies once they begin to roll and move about the cot.  We know that some infants have become entangled or suffocated in the ties and material, or fallen whilst pulling themselves up on the bumpers.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed as a new parent as you have a massive range of baby products to choose from and it makes sense to think that because something is on the market for babies that it’s safe, right? Well, unfortunately this is not the case and it can be really confusing to know what is needed to ensure your baby sleeps safely and soundly. Babies need just a few basic items for sleep: a firm flat surface and some bedding.

In our FREE Baby Care Workshop, we teach safe sleep guidance recommended by the NHS and the Lullaby Trust. These guidelines are to reduce the risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) which used to be known as cot death. Around 200 babies sadly die unexpectedly every year in the UK, usually occurring when a baby is asleep.
